A key driver of the project was to restore and celebrate the craftsmanship that defines the Heal's building. Original staircases, windows and glazed lift elements have been meticulously repaired and enhanced, revealing the richness of the historic architecture. At its heart, the dramatic central staircase becomes both a focal point and a means of movement through the building, its elegant timber detailing and carefully restored balustrades showcasing the quality of the original design. Throughout, contemporary interventions are deliberately understated, allowing the historic fabric and architectural character of the building to speak for themselves.
Natural light shapes the experience throughout the building. Restored rooflights and glazed atrium spaces draw daylight deep into the interior, illuminating generous floorplates and highlighting the textures, materials and craftsmanship of the original architecture. Simple contemporary interventions sit comfortably alongside restored heritage elements, creating bright, calm and adaptable workspaces that feel unmistakably modern while retaining the individuality and character of the historic building. The result is a collection of spaces that would be difficult to recreate today, defined by their scale, quality of light and architectural character.
Delivered while the retail spaces below remained fully occupied, the project required close collaboration between the design team, contractor and heritage authorities. This careful process preserved the architectural significance of the building while improving comfort, performance and usability for modern occupiers. The result is a series of unique workplace environments that celebrate the craftsmanship , character and enduring quality of this landmark building while securing its future for generations to come.
