Working within the historic fabric provided an opportunity to rediscover features that had been concealed over time. During the refurbishment, the original parquet flooring was uncovered and carefully restored. Existing rooflights were refurbished, bringing natural light back into the heart of the building and revealing the scale, craftsmanship and character of the original reading halls. Contemporary shelving, furniture and display elements have been carefully integrated within the historic setting, allowing old and new to sit comfortably alongside one another.
The redesign creates a more adaptable library that reflects the way communities use these spaces today. Reconfigured shelving layouts improve visibility and navigation throughout the floorplate, while flexible areas support reading, study, digital learning and community activity. A dedicated children's library introduces playful forms, colour and interactive elements that encourage curiosity, creativity and early engagement with reading. Bespoke joinery and informal seating create welcoming spaces for visitors of all ages, helping the library feel more open, accessible and engaging.
While modest in scale, the project has transformed the experience of the library. By restoring key heritage features and introducing contemporary spaces designed around learning and community use, the refurbishment creates a library that feels both familiar and renewed. The result is a revitalised civic resource that supports reading, creativity and lifelong learning while ensuring this important cultural institution continues to evolve for future generations.
