St Andrew's Church Community Hall, Barrhead, creates a flexible and welcoming community facility that brings faith, activity and local groups together under one roof.
The new Community Hall extends and enhances the facilities at St Andrew's Church, providing a dedicated space for the combined Arthurlie and South and Levern congregation following the parish amalgamation. While modest in scale, the extension delivers a significant increase in flexibility, creating a space that supports worship, community activities and a wide range of local groups while strengthening the church's connection with the wider Barrhead community.
Designed around flexibility from the outset, the building consolidates a variety of activities previously spread across different locations , including the Brownies, Boys' Brigade, Scouts, Kick Club and Keep Fit groups. At its heart is a generous multi-purpose hall capable of accommodating everything from church gatherings and celebrations to classes, meetings and community events. A full-height movable partition allows the space to operate as one larger hall or two independently accessed rooms, enabling multiple activities to take place simultaneously and ensuring the building can adapt to changing needs over time.
The architectural response embraces simplicity, durability and adaptability. A contemporary brick extension complements the character of the existing church while establishing its own identity on the site. Large openings and high-level windows bring natural light deep into the hall, creating bright and uplifting spaces that can be reconfigured for different activities and group sizes. Integrated storage is carefully incorporated within the building envelope, allowing the hall to remain uncluttered and easy to adapt throughout the day. The simple, robust material palette provides a lasting and practical backdrop for community use.
More than additional accommodation, the Community Hall creates a shared space for congregation, recreation and community engagement. By bringing people together in one accessible and adaptable facility, the extension strengthens existing community networks, supports a diverse range of activities and provides a lasting resource designed around participation, inclusion and connection.
