Newhouse Academy School

New build school, Newhouse Academy, is a 7 Form Entry (FE) secondary school, replacing an intergrid complex no longer fit for purpose in Heywood. The accommodation is to allow for the relocation of the existing school accommodation within the areas scheduled for demolition, in favour of a newly built school with a focus on Net Zero Carbon characteristics.

The site is located along Newhouse Road in the Heywood area of Rochdale and consists of approximately 97,600m2 of land, where the existing Newhouse Academy Secondary school sits and contains a mix of hard and social external areas.

New hard and social landscaping is to replace the proposed demolition area, creating a new schoolyard for activities, sports, teaching, and a breakout area that serves as a passing point between the retained building and the new building.

The entire area within the site boundary is currently operated by the school with no external change of use. The school has no existing contracts in place offering community use but will easily facilitate community access into the building with direct access to assembly and sports halls. There will also be provided optional use of the dining hall and catering kitchen.

The proposals seek permission to partially demolish the existing school building on the site, retaining only the newer ‘Boomerang’ building. The new development will offer significant environmental improvements achieved through the creation of natural habitats, Solar PV’s and enhanced thermal performance of the building envelope.

The partial demolition and rebuild will facilitate the school remaining a 7 Form Entry (FE) secondary school for 1,050 pupils. The proposed replacement building would follow the existing contemporary appearance of the boomerang-shaped school building in the north of the site, which is to be retained. It will form roughly an ‘L’ shape and will be located to the southwest of the retained building.

The proposed replacement building will be 2.5 to 3 storeys in height and has been carefully designed to ensure that it integrates sympathetically into the surrounding area. Care has also been taken to ensure that the 3-storey element remains subordinate to the retained school building at the front of the site. The proposal shall introduce a new traditionally constructed school providing all the school’s existing needs found in the area proposed for demolition, primarily being the sports hall, science rooms and D&T department with additional areas to provide also for SEND learning resource areas for inclusivity and new community access adjacent to the existing car park.
