The new Ardrossan Community Campus is one of our current projects for North Ayrshire Council and builds on our long-standing working relationship with the Council, including large scale school projects at Garnock Community Campus and Largs Campus. We are also working with North Ayrshire Council on Montgomerie Park Primary School, another Passivhaus school. Our experience working with North Ayrshire Council and the relationships we have developed with key personnel have allowed us to understand their evolving goals and build on the success and feedback from our previous projects. North Ayrshire have committed to an ambition to be Net Zero by 2030 with Ardrossan Community Campus and Montgomerie Park Primary School being pathfinder projects to designing very low operational energy school and campus projects. Ardrossan Community Campus is currently at RIBA Stage 4.

The new Community Campus is located on reclaimed land on the coast, north of Ardrossan Harbour and Marina. The previous industrial refinery buildings have been cleared from the site, however remedial works are still required to remove remaining contaminated material and level off the land with a new coastal flood defence and infrastructure installed as part of the enabling works.

The site is part of the wider regeneration Ardrossan North Shore project which includes the new Community Campus and sports field, new private and social housing, a proposed International Marine Science and Environment facility, commercial, public space, new marina, and tourism uses tied together with a new coastal path and coastal flood defence. This is a significant regeneration opportunity to transform a polluted industrial site into an exemplar low carbon, low energy destination.

The Ardrossan Community Campus will combine Winton Primary School and Early Years with Ardrossan Academy Secondary School and enhanced ASN to provide a joined-up learning journey. The campus also includes Community Uses: Swimming Pools, Sports Hall, changing facilities and outdoor Sports pitches, Library, and Health, Police and Social Care functions.

The brief is to achieve 100% LEIP Funding. Passivhaus design and certification is the chosen method to meet this target for very low Operational Energy consumption. In addition, the project is to be designed as Net Zero Carbon in line with current Scottish Future’s Trust guidance and North Ayrshire Council’s Net Zero Carbon goals.

The Challenge

To bring together early years, primary and secondary school education with community social services, health, and sporting facilities into a new pathfinder net zero carbon Community Campus which is a catalyst for regeneration of the remediated coastal quarter in Ardrossan.

The Solution

Through extensive consultation with the local community and education a brief has been developed to ensure that the building will provide an inclusive and state of the art environment. Passivhaus has been set as a goal to achieve net zero carbon to create low energy, healthy, comfortable spaces.

The Outcome

The design of the Campus is centred around the key aims of Passivhaus low energy, in orientation and form of the building, whilst also ensuring that the layout of the spaces within the Campus and the surrounding landscape design create an optimal and visually striking design which will provide a fantastic new focal point for the local community.
