Maths meets Art: Graphics are installed on the Maths and Stats Facade!

jmarchitects are delighted to share images of the graphic 'artwork' as works complete on the Maths and Stats building facade. The 'Black Box' of the Maths and Stats building underwent a recent transformation with elevational graphics that feature Mathematical and Statistical Symbols through a design collaboration with the staff and students of the School.

Situated at the heart of the University of Glasgow Campus, the School of Mathematics and Statistics forms an integral part of a comprehensive campus redevelopment initiative. The architectural enhancements to the existing modular building aimed to establish a distinctive identity for the ever-growing school and integrate it with the campus masterplan, with a focus on enriching the public realm.

On these works, Professor Nigel Mottram, Head of School at the School of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Glasgow kindly shared:

"The new mathematical artwork on the outside of the School of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Glasgow might look like random symbols and equations, but in fact it reflects exactly the work that’s going on inside the building. These symbols and equations represent some of the work of our own researchers and in our own handwriting! The School of Maths & Stats is an internationally renowned centre for research and has been placed 1st in Scotland and 5th in the UK using the results of the most recent UK-wide Research Excellence Framework. The work we do ranges from fundamental research into the more abstract areas of pure maths, through to the more applied areas of mathematics and statistics, where our research in collaboration with partners in Universities, companies and governmental organisations around the world has huge impact in areas such as the environment, healthcare and technology. All of these areas are represented in the new external decoration of the building. Even the patterns around the entrance, and the new floor coverings inside the School are based on the statistical datasets and tiling patterns that our researchers work with. We hope that making these equations and patterns so prominent will inspire future students and the wider public to want to know more about the work we do and mathematics and statistics in general.  

 We’d like to thank the team of designers and architects (from Gleeds and jmarchitects) who helped to turn our equations and datasets into these external designs."

jmarchitects has been working with the university and wider design team to elevate the university campus experience, the objective, to create exceptional learning environments through architectural interventions and engaging design within the Universities existing facilities. We are delighted with the result at the Maths and Stats Building and hope it brings joy and inspiration to the students and staff as they commence the new term.
