Did You Know jmarchitects Collaborate Globally: Delivery of Maggie’s Centre Barts

With a longstanding history of working alongside world-renowned architects, jmarchitects has established a reputation for delivering complex, high-profile projects that merge visionary design with technical excellence. Previous collaborations include the delivery of the world-renowned Reid Building in Glasgow with Steven Holl Architects, demonstrating our ability to translate bold design concepts into fully realised buildings while navigating the challenges of innovative materiality and complex technical execution.

Building on this expertise, jmarchitects played a pivotal role in delivering Maggie’s Centre Barts, a pioneering facility supporting people affected by cancer within the grounds of St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Acting as Executive Architect, the practice collaborated closely with Steven Holl Architects to bring their visionary design to life, creating a space that is both functional and deeply human-centred.

Acting as Executive Architect, jmarchitects collaborated closely with internationally acclaimed Steven Holl Architects, building on a previous partnership in the delivery of the world-renowned Reid Building in Glasgow. This continued collaboration allowed jmarchitects to seamlessly translate Steven Holl’s visionary design for Maggie’s Centre into a fully realised, functional building while ensuring technical and material excellence.

Maggie’s Centres are globally recognised for their focus on human wellbeing, using architecture to create light-filled, nurturing spaces that foster calm, comfort, and community. The St Bartholomew’s centre featured a unique “vessel within a vessel” concept, a luminous glass façade, and bespoke bamboo interiors. Innovative materials and meticulous craftsmanship combined to deliver a building that was both striking and deeply supportive for its users.

The project exemplified the value of international collaboration, coordinating complex technical delivery while respecting the original design intent. In recognition of our role and the successful execution of this ambitious project, jmarchitects were named AJ100 Awards Executive Architect of the Year in 2018. As one judge remarked: ‘jm demonstrated real passion and understanding to ensure the very best possible results.’

The Maggie’s Centre at St Bartholomew’s remains a landmark example of how thoughtful design, innovative materials, and global architectural partnerships can transform healthcare environments, creating spaces that are functional, inspiring, and genuinely uplifting for the people they serve.
