Clydebank Rebuilt Public Realm

This project upgraded the central reservation along the Glasgow Road/Dumbarton Road corridor and transformed Solidarity Plaza, the public space opposite the town hall. The elements of the design come together to signal arrival in Clydebank and to reflect the heritage and culture of the area.

This project represented the first phase of public realm works, part of a major regeneration programme for Clydebank and its riverside. Work centred on the upgrade of Solidarity Plaza opposite Clydebank Town Hall as well as the transformation of 1km of the central reservation along the Glasgow Road corridor in Clydebank.

A key public space, Solidarity Plaza is the centrepiece of the project, which incorporated the use of granite landscaping materials, extensive soft landscaping works, the installation of art and feature lighting, and new signage and street furniture.

The regeneration of the Plaza was carried out following detailed public consultation. Features within the scheme reflect key elements of Clydebank’s heritage. For example, a 10m high granite monolith with red LED markers highlights the town’s wartime links with Poland. The Plaza now provides a flexible space for civic events and is a popular amenity for everyday use.

The Challenge

The brief was to create a high quality location and develop Clydebank as a distinctive and creative regional centre within the Glasgow Metropolitan area.

The Solution

The team developed a holistic design approach that creates a new regime for the public realm including the creation and redevelopment of public spaces at key junctions. The scheme consists of new surface treatments, planting regions and street furniture and stationing of feature lighting.

The Outcome

The project was a winner at the 2005 GIA Design Awards, Scottish Design Awards 2006 in the Landscape Project category and received a Civic Trust Special Award (Landscaped) in 2007.
