Future Architects in the Making! S1 Pupils at Rosehill High are Designing Eco-Friendly Shelters on Solar Punk Island!

James and Lola spent some time with an inspiring group of students to explore site placement, building orientation, space planning, and sustainable materials — all with the goal of designing creative and sustainable shelters!
On May 16th, students at Rosehill High took part in a series of educational sessions with local professionals. jmarchitects were invited to lead an activity focused on designing a shelter for a diverse fictional island. The challenge? Choose a site within a 15-minute walk of all essential needs — food, water, building materials, and energy sources like fire or hydropower.
After selecting their sites, teams developed the shelter’s orientation, program, space planning, material selection, and key architectural features, ensuring their designs responded thoughtfully to the unique characteristics of their chosen locations.
Each of the teams presented their innovative shelter designs to their classmates, followed by a Q&A session to explore the ideas behind each design. Creativity and sustainability in action!
