Barnet to grant Planning Permission for Hasmonean Middle School!

We are delighted that the Borough of Barnet have resolved to grant Planning Permission, subject to GLA approval, for a new middle school and sports building for the Hasmonean School Page Street Site.

Barnet Council Strategic Planning Committee voted unanimously on the 22nd October 2025 to grant Planning Permission for the new Hasmonean development. As the scheme is on Green Belt land it is subject to GLA approval, which is expected shortly.

The project, submitted on behalf of the Jewish Secondary Schools Movement, will provide a new 270 pupil Hasmonean Boys Middle School, to replace their temporary home in Belsize Park, together with a new sports block. The building is on the existing Girls School site at Page Street, Hendon, and is the first phase of a plan to swap the boys and girls schools sites, with their Holders Hill Boys School site being redeveloped to form a new Girls School. It will enable the boys school to increase its intake, while providing new facilities to modern standards on both sites.

Given the Green Belt Land site, the strategy has been to minimise the impact as far as possible. It involves demolishing a poor quality gym and nursery block and replacing it with a new three storey building on almost the same footprint. The project also involves provision of a new MUGA and hard play area to cater for the enlarged number of students. The  design was developed in dialogue with the Local Planning Authority to ensure that the project would be acceptable in Green Belt Policy terms with a modern design that would complement the surroundings.
