jmarchitects at the Mackintosh School of Architecture: Reflections on the Stage 5 Thesis Forum 2025

jmarchitects were delighted to attend the Stage 5 Thesis Forum at the Mackintosh School of Architecture on Thursday, 5th June. It was a pleasure to be welcomed into such an inspiring academic environment and to engage with the next generation of architects as they presented their final year work around the powerful and timely theme of The Ethical City.

The Forum provided a unique opportunity to witness the culmination of months of rigorous investigation and thoughtful design by the graduating students. Using Porto as a lens through which to explore ethical urbanism, the projects interrogated how architecture can meaningfully respond to the complex challenges facing cities today—from climate change and artificial intelligence to food insecurity and political instability. By reflecting on the similarities and contrasts between Porto and Glasgow, the students demonstrated a deep understanding of place, and a strong commitment to designing with purpose, responsibility, and social awareness.

We were particularly struck by the diversity of approaches taken—each student brought a distinct voice to the conversation, yet all shared a dedication to crafting thoughtful, responsive urban proposals that embraced change while remaining rooted in context.

The forum concluded with an informal gathering and GiA prizegiving, offering a chance to celebrate the students' achievements and connect more personally with staff, peers, and fellow professionals.

Our thanks go to the Mackintosh School of Architecture for the invitation and warm hospitality. We left the event not only impressed by the quality of the work, but also encouraged by the critical and creative thinking that will shape the future of our built environment. We wish the graduating cohort every success as they embark on their professional journeys—and look forward to seeing their ideas take form in practice.
