Paul Smith, Architect and Artist of jmarchitects, recently held his solo art exhibition in Glasgow. The exhibition, titled "Into Great Silence," ran from June 14th to 16th alongside the Glasgow International festival of art. Paul's body of work explored the profound contemplative nature of painting, emphasising abstraction and the emotive power of colour, composition, and intuitive mark-making.
Paul drew inspiration from his experiences in Japan, where he lived for a period, incorporating elements of the calligraphic tradition of Japanese "flung ink" paintings and ritual landscapes into his art. The exhibition delved into themes of white, silence, and emptiness, symbolising an expansive energetic realm of 'boundless potentiality'. Paul's intention was to prompt introspection and personal interpretation, evoking the psychological depths of surroundings, objects, and memories through his artwork.
The exhibition served as a culmination of three years of artistic exploration, showcasing Paul's development through automatism and expressive, intuitive painting. In his practice, Paul acknowledged the influence of artists such as Emin, Guston, Mitchell, and Twombly. The artist transitions across various mediums, including drawing, ceramics, sculpture, and photography and has undertaken projects in New York, Iceland, and Kyoto, graduating from the Glasgow School of Art in 2020.
Highlighting the mutually enriching relationship between art and architecture we emphasise the profound impact an artistic vision can have on architectural planning, and conversely, the integration of artistic elements within architectural designs. This symbiosis illustrates the ability of both disciplines to shape human experiences, laterally, architecture through the creation of practical yet aesthetically compelling spaces.
