Govan Old Parish Church Extension - Superstructure Milestone!

There’s a real sense of momentum on site at Govan Old. The extension has reached a major milestone, with the main steel frame now in place!

For the first time, the scale of the new building, and how it sits alongside the historic church, can be clearly read. It strikes a careful balance: respectful of the Category A listed structure and its setting, yet confident as a contemporary addition. Seeing that relationship take shape in three dimensions marks a significant step forward.

Tying new steel into centuries-old fabric demands precision. Careful coordination at every connection point is essential to ensure both structural performance and conservation sensitivity. The result is an approach that allows the extension to read clearly as a contemporary layer, while maintaining the integrity of the historic building.

The new spaces will support a wide range of flexible uses, including community activity, learning, exhibitions, and cultural events. This is particularly important given the site’s rising profile in recent years, with renewed attention on the Govan Stones and the internationally significant early medieval archaeology associated with the church. These remarkable artefacts have helped re-establish Govan Old as a major heritage destination, and the extension will play a key role in how they are displayed, interpreted, and experienced.

Beyond the building itself, the project forms part of a wider strategy for Govan Old, improving accessibility, enhancing circulation, and creating a more welcoming and usable public asset. The extension will provide essential back-of-house and visitor facilities, support increased footfall and enable a broader programme of activity.

This work also sits within a period of real change for Govan. The new pedestrian bridge linking Govan to the West End has significantly improved access across the River Clyde, strengthening connections to the wider city and bringing increased visibility to the area. Alongside this, the regeneration of Govan Old contributes to a growing cultural and civic network that is reshaping perceptions of the district.

With the steel frame now complete, attention will soon turn to external materials and detailing, where the character of the extension will really begin to emerge.
