Glencadam Distillery Opens New Visitor Centre; A Landmark Development for One of Scotland’s Oldest Distillery Sites

jmarchitects are delighted to announce the official opening of the new Visitor Centre at Glencadam Distillery in Brechin, a landmark development that reinforces the distillery’s position within Scotland’s internationally renowned whisky landscape.

Originally established in 1825, Glencadam is one of Scotland’s oldest working distilleries.  The new Visitor Centre presents a fully integrated hospitality and brand experience, incorporating an exhibition and tasting suite, whisky lounge, dedicated retail space, first-floor café and multifunction room offering expansive views across the historic production buildings and town beyond.

A defining architectural gesture within the proposal is the reinstatement of two Doig Ventilators, copper-clad structures inspired by the iconic pagoda forms designed by Scottish architect Charles C. Doig that crown the roof. Historically used to ventilate malt kilns, these contemporary reinterpretations now act as sculptural skylights. Their presence reinstates an important visual marker to the Brechin skyline, reconnecting Glencadam with its architectural heritage while looking forward to the future.

The design approach is rooted in a sensitive response to context and material heritage. Reclaimed stone from the former Brechin Infirmary, a local institution that served the community for over a century, has been carefully integrated into the façades. This reuse reduces embodied carbon while preserving a physical link with the town’s past. Combined with a modern interpretation of traditional distillery architecture, the building expresses continuity of place, ensuring elements of Brechin’s social history remain visible within a new chapter of local industry. Inside, warm materials, crafted details and framed views strengthen the emotional connection between visitors and the working distillery.

Delivered in close collaboration with the client, design team and artisans, the project reflects a collective commitment to material quality and the preservation of craft expertise.
