jmarchitects welcomes the GIA Conservation Team to Govan Old Parish Church

We were delighted to welcome the Glasgow Institute of Architects Conservation committee for a tour of our Phase 1 works at Govan Old Parish Church, a landmark project at the heart of Govan’s regeneration.

Phase 1 focused on the sensitive restoration of the lower ground floor of the Grade-A church, preserving its unique Gothic-revival character and enhancing its historic fabric. From reinstating windows with conservation-led techniques to retaining and refurbishing original joinery, every intervention has been carefully designed to respect the building’s heritage while introducing flexibility for modern use. The lower ground floor has been transformed into office and meeting spaces, combining functionality with the architectural integrity of Robert Rowand Anderson’s 1888 design.

The church grounds, of early medieval origin, create a landscaped setting for a new extension that allows barrier-free access throughout. The phase 2 works will provide lettable office space, toilet facilities, a lift and plant space to revitalise the existing church building as a bookable venue and visitor experience for the Govan Stones. The works will also see the completion of a river-source heat pump that will provide cost-efficient sustainable heating for the building.

With the opening of the Govan-Partick Bridge, improved connections are bringing visitors from across Glasgow, while the Govan Stones continue to attract national and international interest. We are proud to be part of this sensitive restoration and exciting regeneration and look forward to Phase 2.
