We are thrilled to announce that the Calanais Visitor Centre has been featured in an article by the Architect's Journal! This incredible recognition highlights the immense importance of the Calanais Standing Stones, ancient megaliths constructed 5,000 years ago on the Isle of Lewis. Planning permission has recently been granted for our Calanais Visitor Centre project for which jmarchitects Associate Julie Benson recently shared, “jmarchitects have been working with Urras nan Tursachan and the local community for a number of years to develop a world class visitor experience for the historic Standing Stones and we are delighted to achieve this significant project milestone.”  The ongoing collaboration between jmarchitects and the client, Urras nan Tursachan, has been focused on developing a comprehensive vision for the heritage site since 2014. The recent Planning Permission approval for the project further underscores the exceptional cultural, historical, and geographical significance of Calanais. Not only does this project hold immense importance for the local island community, but it also has far-reaching significance for the entire Outer Hebrides. This acknowledgment is a testament to the innovative extension to the existing Calanais Visitor Centre, which has been designed to seamlessly blend with the surrounding landscape, honouring the paramount importance of the Standing Stones. The proposed building not only respects the historic environment but also enhances the visitor experience, solidifying its position as the top destination in the Outer Hebrides.
