Galashiels Community Campus

New 1000 pupil community campus combining secondary education, additional support needs and community sports & leisure facilities within one inspiring building.

Scottish Borders Council

The new Galashiels Community Campus, for Scottish Borders Council, will provide a 13000m2 community campus in the heart of Galashiels. This campus will replace the existing Galashiels Academy with a learning environment for 1000 pupils, deliver new purpose-built accommodation for young learners with severe and complex needs as well as re-provide well used community assets such as Galashiels Swimming Pool and the Queens Leisure Centre in a unified, modern, ambitious facility. The challenge of collocating these currently disparate services required extensive, sensitive engagement with numerous stakeholders and community parties to ensure the proposals presented a positive outcome overall.

Internally, this modern learning space will see core teaching and community spaces arranged around a vibrant central spine which runs through the building encouraging collaboration, creativity, and socialising in addition to delivering space to support staff and pupil wellbeing. The entrance space, ‘Information Plaza’, will become a true community hub within the building, enabling direct access to the 25m swimming pool, internal sports facilities and learning resource centre. Externally, extensive sports facilities including a 2G Hockey Pitch, 3G Rugby & Football Pitch, Grass Football Pitch, Tennis Courts and 100m Running track will sit alongside proposals for the significant re-imagining and expansion of Scott Park, with the provision of new playpark facilities, additional greenspace and improved connections with Gala Policies and Gala Hill woodlands.

In line with Scottish Government’s Learning Estate Investment Programme (LEIP) conditions for funding, the campus has been designed, modelled, and detailed from the outset to deliver an outstandingly low in-use energy demand of 67-83kwh/m2/annum utilising low and zero carbon generating technology (LZCGT). Construction of the campus started on the Scott Park site, adjacent to the existing Galashiels Academy, in Summer 2023 and works are scheduled to complete in Spring 2026. Phasing of the works will enable existing school, sports and leisure facilities to remain open during the duration of the project.

The Challenge

Provide a new community campus that combines a secondary education environment for 1000 pupils with community sports and leisure facilities, sited in a stunning parkland setting which embraces its strong connection with the town.

The Solution

A single building brings education and community together under one roof. A vibrant central spine through the building will encourage collaboration and creativity, while swimming pool and sports facilities are located around a shared main entrance, supporting community access and use of all facilities.

The Outcome

Combining the facilities within a single building puts community use at the heart of the project and its location within Scott Park promotes and celebrates connections to both the landscape and town centre.
