South London Islamic Centre granted Planning!

We are delighted to announce that our Section 73 Planning Application for South London Islamic Centre has now been granted by Lambeth Council.

Our South London Islamic Centre project is for a new building to replace an existing mosque housed within a jumble of buildings on a tight site on Mitcham Lane, a busy high street in Streatham, south London. The idea for the new building is that it should serve as a mosque, a multipurpose building for the Islamic community and a welcoming resource for local residents.

The building is organised around three large spaces: the main and sisters’ prayer halls on the first floor and a multipurpose hall on the second floor to be used for weddings, conferences and as a second main prayer hall at peak times. These are reached via a spacious entrance hall, which also serves as an exhibition space and contains a bookshop and café opening out onto the street. The building also has a madrasah on the third floor with a terrace overlooking Streatham Green.

The application was for a new design to replace an existing Planning Permission which didn’t meet the current needs of the Centre. Given the prominent Conservation Area setting, our design approach was to follow the predominantly red brick and stone architecture of the surrounding buildings, while using pattern to clearly signpost the building as an Islamic centre.
