Setting the standard at Craighill: jmarchitects are celebrating the successful completion of a new residential development in Aberdeen!

We are thrilled to announce the completion and handover of our Craighill residential development in Aberdeen for Aberdeen City Council.

Construction began in Autumn 2024 on the site of the former Craighill Primary School – one of several sites across Aberdeen that forms part of the wider Aberdeen City Council Housing Programme aiming to address a long-term shortage of affordable social rented housing in the city and is the largest housing programme in Aberdeen for over 50 years.

The completed development now boasts eighty-seven new homes of varying size and typology, comprising ten 3-bedroom terraced houses, five 3-bedroom wheelchair accessible terraced houses, eighteen 3-bedroom flats, forty-six 1-bedroom flats and eight 1-bedroom wheelchair accessible flats.

The development maximises the site’s housing potential whilst being considerate of the adjacent context and wider urban fabric. Through the delivery of carefully designed and well-proportioned residential blocks and the use of a simple but well-considered palette of materials and finishes, this has allowed beautifully detailed buildings to respect and sit confidently within their context.

The retention of key existing mature tree clusters present within the site, coupled with the creation of new pockets of quality accessible open spaces as part of a wider landscaping strategy, contributes greatly to the character of this new neighbourhood and has helped bring the disused site back into the community for the residents and wider public to enjoy.

Generously proportioned internal living spaces are flooded with natural light and ventilation, and a mix of private and public amenity is offered through the provision of private patios and gardens alongside communal open spaces and play areas.

All homes are designed to be high quality spaces to inhabit, meeting ‘Housing for Varying Needs’ design criteria and a Gold Standard level of energy efficiency was targeted throughout. The successful delivery of such an aspirational brief has enabled the provision of quality, sustainable and affordable homes that are designed and built for life.
