The Met is a grade ll listed theatre which was no longer answering the needs of a theatre and arts centre. By increasing the back of house facilities, creating a larger open space bar area providing a multi functional space, increased dressing rooms, toilet facilities, storage and making the building fully accessible for all visitors the refurbishment has helped accommodate an increase in visitor numbers and enticed performers to the Theatre, all delivered within the clients budget and on time for the busy Christmas period.

The refurbishment has also seen the building become independent from the neighboring Athenaeum by introducing full mechanical and electric equipment to the new plant deck and plant room, helping reduce the buildings carbon footprint and energy costs. A reconfiguration of the internal layout created space for a 13 person lift and an additional floor, all within the existing fabric of the building. The completed design has been executed sympathetically celebrating the buildings heritage and historic value, yet creating a light and contemporary feel.

Following many years of neglect and minor works the building was dated and in poor repair, it was important through our role as lead designer that we were able to stretch the buildings boundaries and develop a design that would achieve the clients brief and more. Having jmarchitects involved from an early stage helped the client to realise their hopes for the refurbishment. The collaborative approach adopted by the entire team was the force behind the refurbishments success and ensured any issues during construction were addressed and resolved quickly to reduce any delays to its completion.
