
The scheme provides a range of services including four GP practices, PCT services and a pharmacy to serve the community in Huyton, Liverpool. Located on a high-profile site on one of the major approach roads into Liverpool and, with its corner location on a busy junction, has a high visual impact. It was developed as one of a series of schemes in the Renova LIFT framework for Halton and St Helens, Knowsley and Warrington PCTs.
The Blue Bell Health Centre was designed to show how the NHS can significantly reduce its carbon footprint and at the same time deliver a functional, landmark building with a high visual impact that is affordable and value for money.
A BREEAM target of excellent was a pre-requisite for the design, anticipating the introduction of the standard for all healthcare buildings, as was the aim to be the most efficient building in the NHS by a considerable margin. The building demonstrates what can be achieved against the international and national climate change agenda and the part the NHS can play in reducing its carbon footprint. At the same time, it brings to local residents a real demonstration of what can be done, stimulating discussion, debate and personal action.
