Stirling Cricket Club Pavilion

The aspiration for this project was to create a new, internationally recognised cricket facility, in the shadow of the Wallace monument that would respond to its surrounds, and form part of Stirling’s Sports City Campus bringing together an unrivalled sports offering for the community.

The building provides modern facilities for players, for changing and social occasions, and the distinctive roof form and elevations give the building great character and presence.

The club house is manifest as a single storey rectangular building, asymmetrical along both of its main axes, a geometry emphasised by the distinctive from of its roof which itself draws upon the background hills for its silhouette. Deep eaves protect the clerestory windows that are fixed at high level in each of the buildings smaller internal spaces, with views from the clubroom enhanced by the full height glazing to the two sides that address the pitches.

In terms of materials, the building is clad in untreated European Larch. The intention being that over time it will weather and blend with the grey of the roof. A timber veranda extends from the buildings club house and changing rooms providing an external lounge area.

The Challenge

The brief was to create a new pavilion and first class wicket for Stirling County Cricket Club, replacing their original home, adjacent to the new High School of Stirling. Stirling County, founded in 1862, is one of the oldest Cricket Clubs in the UK.

The Solution

The principles of the design are to create a simple timber clad box which responds to the requirements of the cricket club and the existing site conditions. The pavilion is organised to provide maximum visual connection to the 10 and 6 wicket pitches from both the club room and bar.

The Outcome

The new facility was successfully completed and opened in June 2008. Cricket Scotland have already complimented the quality of the facilities and stated that it may be possible to hold international games in the next few years. The building has won several architectural awards.
