Stirling Care Village

This £37m development delivered by hub East Central and Robertson Construction consolidates and enhances local healthcare services on the existing Stirling Community Hospital site.

NHS Forth Valley/ Stirling Council

The vision of the many stakeholders including NHS Forth Valley, Stirling Council and the Scottish Ambulance Service is to work together to provide an integrated health and social care service, through co-location and collaboration.

Following a jmarchitects masterplan in 2013, the first new building to open was the GP & Minor Injuries Centre, comprising 3 GP practices, X-ray, Minor Injuries and Out of Hours services, plus a Scottish Ambulance base.

The next phase to complete will be the Bellfield Centre, which will include over 100 elderly care bedrooms for Intermediate Care, Palliative Healthcare, Long Term Residential Care and Assessment.

The final phases of decant, demolition, site wide landscaping and a new build Scottish Ambulance Service vehicle workshop.

The site layout was developed to complement the topography and natural features by linking remaining and new buildings with a series of landscaped spaces, to draw the visitor towards key entrances.

The character and setting of the original 1920s hospital and residential context was respected in the scale and massing of the design of the new built form, taking full advantage of the southerly aspect with open balconies at the end of each care unit pavilion.

A key aspiration of the client was to set the standard for Dementia care, we worked closely alongside the Dementia Centre at the University of Stirling to encompass the latest research findings.  The architectural response therefore focussed on Dementia friendly design at every level – from the macro ‘village’ masterplan wayfinding and landscaping to the micro home environment and interior design.  This therapeutic environment extends into the courtyard and community gardens offering further opportunity for sensory experience, rehabilitation, interaction and activity.

All of these elements encourage independence amongst those with Dementia and create a sense of well-being for all.
