jmarchitects have been selected as finalists for the Scottish Design Awards!
Our projects Maryhill Locks and Market Street Hotel have been shortlisted in the Residential and Commercial/Office/Hotel Building Project categories.
The Maryhill Locks project is the latest phase of the masterplan, the design brief for which was to create thirty-three sustainable and flexible 3 and 4 bed terraced houses. The buildings are arranged in a regular terrace which re-establishes the street edge, whilst breaking the terrace into four separate buildings and orientating these to be parallel to the Phase 3 development gives the appearance of a stepped building line, breaking up the monolithic quality of the block and ensuring that the building form is animated and interesting rather than solid.
Market Street Hotel is set behind a striking façade of Scottish stone at the point where Edinburgh’s historic Old Town meets the New Town, the hotel emerges as a cultural gateway to both the city’s storied past and its pulse-quickening present. The visual concept of the 98-room hotel pays homage to the capital’s character and historic narrative, while simultaneously exploring Scottish cosmopolitanism.
