Roundhay Primary Campus is a two form entry school, providing the lower years for a ‘through’ school. Built in the Roundhay conservation area in the green belt close to Leeds, the project was delivered under Leeds City Council’s off-site fabrication framework and brought into use in March 2013.

Forming the second location for Roundhay School Technology & Language College, this 2 form entry primary facility accommodates 420 pupils, located in the green belt and the Roundhay Conservation area giving a pupil age range of nursery to 18.
The level difference on site enables the school to gain direct access to the play spaces and landscaping from both floor levels turning a challenge into a distinct positive. Natural stack ventilation and good insulation levels create the right environment for the classrooms being delivered to factory quality standards.
Internally the layout of the building responds to the functional brief for the school, key areas being the classrooms themselves which require good environmental design to create the best conditions for learning. The classrooms are therefore arranged on two floors either side of the circulation spaces through the building.

The Challenge
Delivery of a two stream primary school in a 26 week programme combined with the challenges of a modular fabrication process. On a ‘Green Belt’ site sloping some 15metres across its section.
The Solution
The design has been evolved with Children’s Services and was constructed under the ‘Leeds Basic’ framework utilising off-site modular construction to achieve challenging cost and programme targets whilst giving a fully bespoke high quality solution to this sensitive and steep site.
The Outcome
This approach has been acknowledged by CABE, Leeds Council & Manchester Council. Following the completion of this school jmarchitects have been appointed on a further four off site fabricated primary schools in the NW under a PSBP Capital Funded programme.
