The project was part of the Argyll and Bute PPP package and comprised the integration of various different faculties within the campus, namely – Rockfield Primary, Non-Denominational Primary School; St Columbas Primary, Denominational Primary School; Drummore Learning Centre, Special Needs; a Pre 5 Unit and a Gaelic Teaching Unit.

The brief was to design and construct a facility with that would reflect the aspirations of the council in relation to attainment, achievement and, in particular, inclusion. This is reflected in the quality of both the design and the selection of materials throughout and the internal & external access arrangements. The building is inclusive in every sense, and includes a synthetic pitch, fully accessible internal and external spaces, a gymnasium, Dining/Assembly Space and ample parking within a very tight site.

The school grounds are aesthetically designed and include garden areas for pupils to address issues contained in Grounds for Learning and Eco Schools.

The Challenge

The Authority required that the campus be designed to embrace an inclusive learning and teaching environment with shared internal and external spaces. At the same time they desired visually identifiable elements for each of the different schools.

The Solution

The simple palette of white render, facing brick and timber cladding identifies individual blocks within the campus and this palette together with the scale of dual pitch teaching wings provide an image which is both modern and appropriate to its context.

The Outcome

The design of Oban Primary Campus responds to the steeply sloping topography of the site and has resulted in a unique building for the Authority. The building is inclusive in every sense, and includes a synthetic pitch, fully accessible internal and external spaces, a gymnasium, Dining/Assembly Space and ample parking within a very tight site.
