Glencadam Distillery Visitor Centre

The project is for the refurbishment and extension of the existing Visitor Centre buildings at Glencadam Distillery, creating a world-class visitor experience which responds to and recognizes its historic context.




Angus Dundee Distillers

Glencadam began production in 1825 and is now the only Distillery in the county of Angus. After passing through a number of owners, it was purchased in 2003 by Angus Dundee Distillers, with their blending lab now located at the distillery. The existing Visitor Centre sits on a gentle hill in the centre of the Distillery Complex accessed via a road to the West which leads back to Brechin. Adjacent to the Visitor centre, the VIP Suite is a small stone cottage sitting quaintly amongst the larger warehouse buildings.
The project is for the refurbishment and extension of these existing buildings to greatly enhance the visitor experience while respecting the historic character and setting of the distillery as well as the image of the Glencadam brand.

The new Visitor Centre brings a rich visitor experience to the historic whisky site and will provide a shop, exhibition space, tasting rooms, a whisky lounge, and a café and function room on the first floor. Meanwhile the conversion of the adjacent VIP Suite seeks to foster an experience of luxury and welcome to the Distilleries most valued clientele.

The site strategy involves the formation of a new car parking area for guests to the Visitor Centre at the South East plot. A gentle slope will take guests on a journey through new landscaping works, past the barrel holding area and the copper still which will positioned adjacent to the Centre.

The proposal seeks to form a vernacular language utilising a robust yet dignified palette of materials to create variety in elevational approach and character drawing cues from traditional and contemporary distillery vernacular to embed the building within its context whilst creating a world-class visitor experience.

The architecture of the visitor centre seeks to draw on the traditional roof forms of the Glencadam Distillery, reinterpreting the ‘Doig Ventilators’ as skylights providing natural light to the space inside. A stone facade to complement the existing structure wraps around the building drawing on the site’s rich heritage. A large quantity of local stone has been salvaged from the recently demolished Brechin Infirmary, strengthening Glencadam’s strong connection to local history and heritage.

The design solution involves the re use of an existing cottage currently used to greet VIP guests to the Distillery. A two storey-stone Building which faces the Visitor Centre on the opposite side. The proposal for the VIP Suite cottage involves the careful re-planning of the internal floor plans. A kitchen, WCs and tasting area is proposed on the first floor, with an addition of a staircase which takes guests up to the first floor and an additional bar and tasting area. Whilst most of the alterations are internal, a large glazed Dormer addition is proposed for the First Floor tasting room which will open the space and fill the area with light.

The proposals seek to develop a vernacular language seeking to honour the local architecture and existing buildings. Utilising a robust yet dignified palette of materials the new Visitor Centre will be of a character befitting to the historic distillery.
