The building is located on the outskirts of the town of Forfar with a landscaped accessible approach from the town centre on the south side and to the north a 200-space car park with 50 car overspill facility, school bus collection points, a pupil drop-off zone and municipal bus stop. The facilities inside the building include a 25m, 5 lane swimming pool, training pool with adjustable height floor, double games hall, fitness suite, gymnasium, dance studio, and dedicated community learning rooms.

The new leisure facilities, being run by the Angus Council leisure department Angus Alive, replace the existing Forfar Swimming pool and Lochside Leisure Centre, combining the services provided previously by these two separate sites within the one building with the aim of delivering the highest standard of environment for both community and school users. Integration of the leisure facilities within the overall campus was an important part of the brief and a key design driver with the swimming pool located adjacent to the main community entrance concourse and combined school and leisure reception. This concourse foyer contains the community café with views of the pool area via glazed doors and screens along with a merchandise sales area adjacent to the reception. The design resulted from extensive community consultation along with detailed stakeholder input from ANGUSalive and Angus Council.

First class teaching facilities are provided in the 3-storey teaching block which is located around a triple height dining and social space in the middle of the building. Various breakout and informal learning and teaching spaces overlook this space along with informal meeting and study rooms. The classrooms are located to the perimeter of the building to maximise views across the Angus countryside and natural light afforded by the ribbon windows that run the length of the building.

The Challenge

Providing a building that integrates a first-class school learning environment with community facilities, primarily a new leisure centre for Forfar and the local area to replace outdated facilities.

The Solution

Two separate but integrated blocks were created, one housing the new school the other the leisure facilitates including an 8 court games hall, 25m swimming pool, training pool, gymnasium, and fitness suite. Linking the two blocks is a double height glazed circulation space off which is located the community café.

The Outcome

The dual aspect of the new community entrance addresses both the town centre to the south and car park and bus drop-off to the north serving both pedestrians approaching from the town and car and bus users from the surrounding area. The community concourse provides a clearly defined, light and welcoming access to the leisure and community facilities and school.
