Brechin Community Campus was delivered by the East Central HubCo. on behalf of Angus Council. jmarchitects were appointed as lead designers for the project which opened to the public in February 2016. The Council’s aspiration was to create a ‘campus’ building which would function, not just as a school but as a community resource, accessible to the general public for leisure and sports use and supporting life-long learning opportunities for the people of Brechin and the surrounding area. Throughout the project careful consideration was given to maximising the usability of internal and external spaces in order to create transformational, flexible and adaptable teaching spaces that are capable of supporting a wide range of teaching and learning styles and techniques in accordance with the ‘Curriculum for Excellence’.

The design concept for the school was developed around two simple ideas;

Firstly there was a desire for the building to formally address Duke Street, the main route to the building from the town centre which rises uphill and terminates at the entrance to the school site. A large glazed entrance of equal width to the street itself beckons visitors into the building and a spacious, brightly-lit reception space. This public arrival ‘room’ provides access to all parts of the campus including the school, sports centre, theatre and library and is home to a community cafe with views over the swimming pool and climbing wall.

Secondly, where Duke Street terminates, the campus building creates a new street all of it’s own – a wide, bright internal ‘street’ which is alive with activity throughout the day serving as the primary circulation space for Brechin High School but also acting as a dining, learning, performance and social space. The ‘street’ is glazed at one end with views to the distant hills and is enclosed at the other with a small amphitheatre which the pupils have taken to calling Brechin’s ‘Spanish Steps’. The character of the building is largely determined by its materials and structure which is expressed wherever possible. The grey brick cladding, silver metal paneling and clean white render lend a mature and sophisticated feel to the Campus while the expressed concrete frame gives an air of permanence and dependability.
