Savile Row, “The Golden Mile of tailoring” is located in Mayfair in London’s West End and is famous for housing some of the world’s most bespoke tailors. The iconic property was built in 1733 and has had an interesting history, where the Bowler Hat was invented in 1950, and where in 1969, the Beatles famously held their last performance on the rooftop of Apple Corps offices

In February 2008 jmarchitects gained planning and listed building consent for the extension and comprehensive refurbishment of this Grade II Listed building. The historical features to the important rooms at the front of the building were carefully preserved whilst the whole building was brought up to the standard expected by current day occupiers.

New services, including air conditioning were carefully integrated into the existing fabric and a part new floor of office accommodation was created to the rear of the fifth floor.

The Challenge

To integrate new services and facilities and to create contemporary quality office space whilst respecting and preserving the historic fabric and important architectural elements of this fine building.

The Solution

Working closely with Westminster and with a Heritage specialist we were able to formulate proposals that enhanced the original features of the original building and refurbished and extended the more recent extensions to the rear.

The Outcome

A completely renovated, enlarged and refurbished office building which retains the prestigious and appealing historical rooms to the original building and provides flexible and efficient office space to the rear linked by a redesigned central stair.
