Woodlands Primary School, Irvine

An extension to an existing primary school in the town of Irvine to provide additional classrooms, shared learning space and a dedicated nursery facility.

Date
2014

Client
North Ayrshire Council

Value
£4m

Following a review of their education estate across Irvine, North Ayrshire Council asked us to prepare proposals for the extension of Woodlands Primary School to achieve a total capacity of 400 pupils. In order to achieve this, four additional classrooms were required together with a shared activity space. In addition, the brief required a dedicated nursery for 50 children with independent access, internal connections to the main school and sheltered outdoor space.

Our approach was to create a new language of architecture for the school extension giving it a distinct and contemporary identity of it's own. The new classrooms are orientated towards the playground and the site entrance to the north with the nursery playroom opening onto a secure and sheltered nursery garden to the south. Timber framed construction was selected for the project and dark painted timber boarding was chosen as a cladding material; both for its sustainable credentials and as a reference to nearby housing stock.

Full height glazing and large rooflights flood the spaces with natural light and sliding partitions give teachers the flexibility to open or close classrooms to the shared activity space as required. A pupil route from the main school building to the playground is maintained which exits through the courtyard space between the classroom cluster and the nursery.
