Twechar Healthy Living and Enterprise Centre, Glasgow

The refurbished Twechar Healthy Living and Enterprise Centre acts as a focus for the community and as a base to deliver a number of health and community services.

This project involved the extension and adaptation of a 1970’s sports building in Twechar. The council had identified this as their flagship project for the regeneration of the neighbourhood and village.

One of the tasks was to reinforce the entrance with the addition of a south facing café that opened up on to a deck to create a community asset in the evening. A viewing window was created into the sports hall and the open aspect of the café reinvigorates the visitor’s sense of arrival in the new facility.

The new building has become the centre of the community with a doctor’s surgery, pharmacy, resource area and meeting rooms. Combined with the sports facility this is a positive addition for young and old in the town.

Twechar Community Action Value

The Challenge

The existing recreation centre consisted of a single storey steel framed building which was built in 1987/88 and was no longer fit for purpose. The project was seen as a flagship that would kick start other activity and regeneration in the neighbourhood.

The Solution

Our approach was to take a very inward looking building and make it ‘speak’ to the community.Consultation on the project brief to ensure a robust business plan was established early on and was one of the key items in the project’s success.

The Outcome

The building has become the new village centre for Twechar and has had a positive impact on people’s lives from pre-school children through to elderly citizens. The bringing together of GP, crèche, community café, pharmacy and fitness facilities has helped to achieve strong community interaction.
