Bolton Town Hall

This scheme, secured through the North West Construction Hub, saw the refurbishment and reorganisation of this prominent listed building in the heart of Bolton. We worked with our client to get more use out of the space available, increasing efficiency and reducing running costs.

Date
2015

Client
Bolton Council

Value
£8m

Accommodating in excess of 900 employees within 725 workstations, implementing an agile working strategy of 8 / 10 ratio, the existing cellular plan of the grade 2* listed building was ill equipped to the needs of a high tech, socially dynamic modern working council headquarters.

Through the sensitive demolition of internal walls, it was possible to provide large clear floor plates, offering flexible space to accommodate a variety of team focused areas of work. High-quality kitchen, welfare and hot-desking areas strategically located off the main circulation spaces encourage social interaction amongst building users with the aim to increase cross-fertilization of core values.

The extensive refurbishment included a full strip out of the obsolete building services and the reinstatement of a sophisticated service strategy to ensure the new office environment is optimised for its occupants. The loose fit exposed installation of services allows for easy access for ongoing maintenance while allowing new systems to be easily introduced with little disruption enabling the building to move with the very latest technological advances offer a high degree of future flexibility.

The Challenge

Bolton Council aimed to significantly enhance the quality of the spaces and facilities that on offer to the local community at Albert Halls, whilst also addressing key long standing maintenance and accessibility issues.

The Solution

A full roof refurbishment was undertaken, with access and maintenance considered heavily. New walkways were installed to provide safe routes throughout.  A new level access entrance and passenger lift have been provided, as well as bespoke room by room schemes to give an end product that is fitting of the buildings standing within the community.

The Outcome

Following many years of neglect and minor works the building had become dated and was in poor repair. The works undertaken have secured its future for many years to come. The completed design has been executed sympathetically celebrating the buildings heritage and historic value, yet creating a contemporary feel.
