Walker Primary School
Here are some images of the recently completed Walker Primary School in London. jmarchitects were appointed by Spatial Initiative. The new build school features include a large Sports Hall, ICT Suite and Kitchen Facilities over two storeys with a role of 421 pupils.
The school is in a relatively rural setting on a prominent site in the Southgate Green Conservation Area and is bordered by the historic Walker Cricket Ground. The current accommodation is a mix or the original building together with more recent, but poor quality additions and temporary blocks. For the school to be able to run their education program and have the staff and pupils in a safe and comfortable surroundings it was considered essential for the school to move onto a new building.
The scheme uses an off-site modular solution for the structure, with on-site cladding and fit-out, to minimise the construction time and avoid disruption to the school curriculum. The project involved retaining the existing school on site through part retention of the existing buildings through the construction process and part use of a temporary block. This meant that the siting of the new building was relatively constrained given the need to ensure safety during the construction process. The need to retain several important trees added a significant additional complexity to the design process and a plan form was developed that was highly efficient, whilst being sculpted to avoid the root protection zones of the most important trees.
The project was developed through an intense period of consultation with both the school and Local Authority and we have developed an efficient and affordable design solution that meets all the required Department for Education criteria. The construction phase will demonstrate the benefits of the specified off-site technology.
