Shortlisting for jmarchitects in 2017 Architects Journal Architecture Awards
We are honoured that James Gillespie’s Campus has been shortlisted for the 2017 Architects Journal Architecture Awards in the School Project of the Year Category.
James Gillespie’s has been chosen alongside eight other projects from around the United Kingdom to compete in the first ever AJ Architecture Awards which showcase the very best built projects. Leading figures in the Architecture and Construction industry are among the experts on the judging panels who will visit the shortlisted projects. In addition to stand-out design, the judges will consider each project in detail – such as how it has met or exceeded the brief, how it has promoted client or community engagement, and how it has excelled in the use of space or sense of place. Winners will be revealed at a Gala Dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on the 7th of December
James Gillespie’s Campus, Edinburgh
James Gillespie’s Campus is located in Marchmont, Edinburgh, within the listed boundary walls of Bruntsfield House, a Grade A listed tower house. The site has been home to James Gillespie's Primary and High Schools for many years and benefits from a complex array of historic and architectural layering. Sequentially developed over a number of years the project encapsulated the full educational journey from a new nursery building and an extension to the existing primary school to a new-build secondary school for 1150 pupils. Our proposals created five new buildings on the site, arranged to relate both to the centrally positioned listed building and the surrounding context of Victorian tenemental perimeter blocks. The buildings vary from single storey to three storeys, depending on their location on the site, the campus creates an aspirational internal and external education environment which strives to embrace the requirements of the curriculum for excellence.
